Discovering God’s Unfailing Love in Every Twist of Our Story

The Timeless Love Story

Does the love of God still feel like breaking news in your life? As Christians, we sometimes find the “old, old story” growing stale, especially if we’ve walked with Christ for many years. But the writers of Scripture never tire of recounting this theme. They never take it for granted. Psalm 136 provides a vivid picture of what keeping God’s steadfast love front and center looks like in the life story of His people.

Thanksgiving and History

The psalm begins with thanksgiving to God (v. 1–3) and then takes us on a journey through Israel’s history. From the creation of the world (v. 4–9) to the exodus (v. 10–16) and into the promised land (v. 17–22), every twist and turn is woven into this love story. But what sets Psalm 136 apart is the phrase repeated in every single verse—a total of 26 times!—“for His steadfast love endures forever.”

The Repetition as a Spiritual Speed Bump

At first glance, the refrain might seem excessive. Imagine reading the psalm without it—the story flows smoothly. But the inspired poet has a purpose. The repetition serves as a spiritual speed bump. It slows us down, drawing our attention again and again to God. It reminds us that everything in Israel’s history is purposeful and tethered to God’s unwavering love.

Steadfast Love: The Heartbeat of Israel’s Journey

God’s steadfast love—these are the very words He used when speaking to Moses (Exodus 34:6). His face looms behind Israel’s journey. And we, too, are part of this storyline. But our story surpasses even Israel’s. Through Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection, God’s enduring love reaches its pinnacle: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son” (John 3:16).

Conclusion: Slow Down and Repeat

So, let’s slow down, brothers and sisters. Let’s repeat after the psalmist: “The steadfast love of God endures forever.” In every trial, every joy, every mundane moment, God’s love remains unshaken. It’s the heartbeat of our story—the blessing of spiritual speed bumps that keep us anchored in His love.
